#NSALE: Public Access Starts TONIGHT!

NordysAnni

From tomorrow (July 20th) until August 5th, the hyped Nordstrom Anniversary Sale will be open to non-cardholders (and cardholders). Unfortunately, many items have long sold out or only are available in a few colors and sizes.

For those of you eagerly anticipating your turn at the good merch, I’ve updated my original list of picks to only include items that still have plenty of options in stock, and also added a few new picks (in green!)

If there’s something you had your eye on that is sold out, fear not. Every year there seem to be a ton of restocks the first day of Public Access. There will also be restocks randomly throughout the rest of the sale as people start returning things. In addition, I’ve had occasional success finding sold out items by shopping in store.

To be honest, at this point most of the stuff I ordered still hasn’t arrived yet, and I also haven’t had ample time to try out the things that have arrived. I’ll hopefully be able to give a final verdict on everything by the end of next week!

Onto the stuff!

Nordstrom Anniversary Sale 2018 Picks (on a budget!)

The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is back in full swing and I couldn’t let it pass by without sharing all the great deals I’m shopping for! This year I did almost all of my shopping online as my school/clinic schedule makes it difficult for me to be available during store opening hours. I think there are advantages and disadvantages to both online and in-store shopping so I highly recommend you guys try a mix of both to get the best stuff!

If you’ve been living in a shopping hole and have no idea what the #nsale is, look no further than this blog post I did a couple years back!

The sale started on July 12th for cardholders and will open up to the public on the 19th. Since we are already a few days in at this point, a lot of items, sizes, and colors have already sold out. For stuff you really want, definitely check back often for restocks, and remember to try looking in store as well! While normally I try to promote fiscal responsibility, with this sale my mantra has always been buy now, ask questions later. Nordstrom’s generous and easy return policy makes it a no-brainer! Of course, you won’t be able to buy anything right now without a Nordstrom Credit or Debit card, so make sure you shop with one or find a friend who can!

Let’s start with the things I’ve bought so far. I am limited by my student budget so all these items are under $65, and most are under $40. Many of these items I ordered in multiple colors and sizes. Most of it won’t come in until next week, and hopefully I’ll be able to update on all of the stuff once I’ve tried it on.

Anthropologie Tag Sale: Info + Haul

I originally filmed a video to accompany this post but have found it difficult to upload where I am on vacation right now. So here’s a post instead, and perhaps I’ll get the video up sometime later after I get back!

UPDATE: After a handful of attempts, I was able to get the video up and running!

I feel as if, for every person that worships Anthropologie religiously, there’s someone who detests it vehemently. I understand both viewpoints: on one hand, their stuff is beautiful and rather unique: they focus on the statement pieces rather than the basics, and sell things we can’t find in department stores. On the other hand, most of the time it is prohibitively expensive and also represents a culture of commercializing the aesthetic of independent artisans.

What I’ve discovered over the years, however, are a couple things. First, Anthropologie does carry a few brands which can be considered more “commercial” and a source for mass-produced clothing. But, many of the pieces they feature are made by smaller, independent labels. It’s a great way to discover new brands and support their work even after their merchandise leaves Anthropologie.

Second, Anthropologie has sales all the time. It used to be that things only got marked down a little bit, resulting in prices that were still unpalatably high. However, in recent years this has been changing. It is now not just possible, but feasible, to buy great stuff at a huge discount.

Anthropologie’s Tag Sale is a great time to take advantage of their discounts. Tag Sales involve taking an additional discount off already reduced prices. The additional discount ranges from 20%-40%, and sales occur every 1-2 months. The most recent ones have seemed to last for multiple weeks.

For their summer tag sale (which is still going on now), the additional discount is 30%. I typically like to shop in store, since it’s easier to find items which are the last of a color/size, which are typically marked down even more because of that. However, this time I was out of town when the sale started so I shopped it online instead. There was still a ton of great stuff at a huge discount, and I was very happy with what I ended up getting.

The current Tag Sale is still going on with tons of great stuff, especially things summer items that can be worn right away! Although most of the things in my haul are now out of stock, my intent in showing you my haul is to demonstrate the kind of things that you can get at very deep discounts.

Nordstrom Anniversary Sale 2017 Early Access Round-up

The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is meant to be treated like a marathon, not a sprint. If you try to race through it like Black Friday, chances are you’ll end up tired, dehydrated, crampy, and cranky.

That said, I wanted to shared what I’ve bought so far as a means to help you focus in on the good stuff if you’re feeling overwhelmed by the literally thousands of items that are in this sale. I did my shopping in a couple rounds, online first, then in person with my mom in tow. I’ll definitely be able to comment much more on the stuff I saw in store, but I’ll try to be as comprehensive as I can.

Sometimes I feel like I could’ve lived in Victorian times because of how much I love a good puffed sleeve. I’m like Anne of Green Gables in that way.

ModCloth Stylish Surprise is On!

Super cute bird shirt I got for Stylish Surprise last year!

Just a quick post to let everyone know that ModCloth’s Stylish Surprise sale has launched once again. This sale occurs 2-3 times every year as a way for ModCloth to clear some of their extra stock. It’s a great way to get their clothes at a deeply discounted price, but also lots of fun to open up a surprise.

For more info about Stylish Surprise, check out my blog post and unboxing video from last fall!

At time of writing, it looks like the shoes and housewares are already sold out, but there are still many sizes left in the dress and apparel categories, along with accessories.

Although I will not be participating this time (trust me–my closet is already packed to the brim), it is something that I recommend if you love ModCloth’s clothes and also love surprises.

I Gave Stitch Fix a Second Chance! (VIDEO + Try-On)

“I’ll try anything twice,” said a wise blogger I used to follow. As I try new products and services I try to have the mentality that first impressions aren’t everything. When an opportunity comes up to give something a second try that won’t greatly inconvenience me in some way, I have been known to throw my hands in the air and say “why the heck not?”

After leaving feedback on my last fix on StitchFix’s website, a customer representative reached out to me apologizing for the fix and offering to send another fix with the $20 styling fee waived.

“Why the heck not?”

Besides the feedback from last time I didn’t leave any additional information for my stylist Danielle as my needs and requests remained the same: clothes to wear in clinic and for performances.

The box she sent was greatly improved upon the first one. I made an unboxing and try-on video (unboxing starts at 1:41, try-on at 5:45), check it out below:

I Tried Stitch Fix! (VIDEO Unboxing + Try-On)

I was first introduced to Stitch Fix a couple years ago by a friend who was a new mom at the time. She loved that it challenged her to try new things, renewed her wardrobe for her post-baby body, and spared her of attempting to go shopping with baby in tow. Since then a few other (non-mother) friends have tried it, all with mixed results.

In deciding whether I wanted to try it for myself, I spent the last couple years watching many, many unboxing videos on YouTube. I’ve probably heard every kind of positive and negative critiques out there at this point from both friends and strangers on the internet. After all that I came to the conclusion that I wouldn’t try it unless I could do so for free.

I finally relented this month when my bank offered a promotion to waive the styling fee.

The Deets:

Stitch Fix is a styling service in the form of a subscription box. Frequency of subscriptions ranges from every 2 weeks to every 3 months. You can also request a box at any point in time.

After filling out a style profile asking about your likes, dislikes, needs, and price points, you are matched up with a stylist that picks out 5 items for your box. After your box arrives, you have 3 days to try everything on and send anything back that you don’t like in a prepaid shipping envelope. You pay a $20 styling fee upfront which is applied toward purchase of the items. If you purchase all 5 items, you get a 25% discount off the total.

Your box of items comes with a personal note from your stylist and style cards with ideas of how to wear the items.

I got around to filming an unboxing and try-on video that I am every excited to show you guys! (Unboxing starts at 2:47, try-on starts at 9:20)

HOW TO: Add extra holes to a belt!

One of my goals for the new year is to be less wasteful — buy fewer things, but also throw away fewer things.

Last year I was thisclose to throwing away one of my favorite leather belts that had stretched out beyond use, when I came across a blog post on DIY leather hole punching. When it comes to fashion, I am not big on DIY because I am no good with a needle and thread or sewing machine. But this seemed so easy even I could do it.

The method uses just a few simple tools for professional-looking results. Check out the video below for a live demo!
